The Enzymatic Response of Astrocytes to Various Ions in Vitro
نویسنده
چکیده
The effect of environmental ion concentration on the enzyme activity of astrocytes was investigated in tissue cultures of rat cerebral cortex. It was found that the oxidative enzymatic activity (succinic dehydrogenase, DPN-diaphorase, and several other enzymes) of astrocytes depended on the concentration of NaCl in the environment. This response was not specific for NaCl, but was also elicited by MgCl(2) and LiCl; the response was less consistent, and often questionable for KCl. However, only NaCl could elicit enzymatic changes in astrocytes at concentrations known to be present in a living organism. Astrocytes were the only cells which responded this way; it appeared that the foot-plates were particularly involved in the response since increase of enzyme activity occurred earlier in the foot-plates than in the perikarya. It was concluded that astrocytes are metabolically involved in the maintenance of the ionic and osmotic environment of the central nervous system, particularly in regard to the active transport of sodium.

Response of potato species to salt and osmotic stress in vitro and the role of acetylsalicylic acid: non-enzymatic antioxidants . Fatemeh Daneshmand1*, Mohammad Javad Arvin2
In a series of experiment, the response of two contrasting potato species, namely, Solanum acaule (tolerant) and Solanum tuberosum cv. Agria (intolerant) to salt (80 mM NaCl) and drought stress (15% polyethylene glycol;PEG) was studied in vitro. Furthermore, the role of acetyl salicylic acid (ASA) (1 and 10 µM) in alleviating oxidative stress was investigated. In Agria cultivar, NaCl and PEG r...

Introduction: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is generally known as a manageable but not yet curable autoimmune disease affecting central nervous system. A potential therapeutic approach should possess several properties: Prevent immune system from damaging the brain and spinal cord, promote differentiation of oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs) into mature oligodendrocytes to p...
متن کاملP10: Isolation and Culture of Primary Microglial Cells from Glioblastoma Patients
Glioblastoma multiform (GBM) is the most common and malignant form of glial tumors. GBM microenvironment contains various cell types showing characteristics of activated or dimorphic macrophages/microglia. Some of these cells provide significant help for tumor growth, while others are able to inhibit tumor progression. Microglia play a major role in brain function by monitoring tissue for patho...

Epilepsy is neurological disorders that afflict many people around the world with a higher prevalence rate in children and in low income countries. Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is result from hippocampal sclerosis is a neurological disorder with difficult treatment. Stem cells can transform into any type of cells such as glial cells, consequently stem cells can use for medical treatment. Stem c...
متن کاملReactive oxygen species generation and use of antioxidants during in vitro maturation of oocytes: a Review
In vitro maturation (IVM) is emerging as a popular technology at the forefront of fertility treatment and preservation. However, standard in vitro culture conditions usually increase reactive oxygen species (ROS), which have been implicated as one of the major causes for reduced embryonic developmental competence. It is well-known that higher than physiological levels of ROS triggers granulosa ...
